Introducing Biomorph's Maxo and Exo Laptop desks-- ergonomically designed,
precision-crafted, and height-adjustable media furniture.
"The media market has constantly evolving workstation needs as new
types of equipment is added to daily tasking. It's common for an animator,
for instance, to require three monitors, two keyboards and a variety
of peripherals. On the flip side some media offices are simply looking
for sleek, space efficient stations where employees are able to setup
laptops and portable equipment," says industrial designer Stephen
Barlow-Lawson of I.D/DESIGN. "The new Maxo and Exo LT desks are designed
to meet these types of contemporary media workstation needs."
Computer Equipment Finds a Palatial New Home: The Maxo Desk
The Maxo desk, launched at Siggraph 2001 in August, was created as
an extension of current media computer equipment - not an afterthought.
The ultimate computer peripheral, Biomorph's Maxo desk is a user-centric
tool, which allows the equipment heavy media industry the opportunity
to comfortably outfit their workstations.
Says Barlow-Lawson, "It's hard to strike a balance between a flexible,
easy to use workspace and the large amount of equipment most media
people require. The Maxo desk, created at the request of a leading
media based industrial design studio, allows peripherals and work
space to remain in balance."
The Worker On The Move: The Exo LT Desk
Office furniture designs have only begun to respond to the needs of
the media workforce. The driving concept behind the development of
the Biomorph Exo LT is that desks should be comfortable to use but
also accommodate the individual's work habits and the company's work
philosophy.
"Workers today are constantly on the go and new philosophies have
been developed regarding workstations and how they are used," says
Barlow-Lawson, a pioneer of ergonomic workstation design who launched
Biomorph in 1991 at Designer's Saturday at the IDCNY, sponsored by
Wilsonart Corporation. "Many people commute between multiple offices
or spend most of their time on the road, with a laptop as their only
work computer. The Exo LT desk was created to accommodate the ultimate
on the go individual and the new breed of media designer who uses
today's powerful laptop computer exclusively."
A HEALTHY SOLUTION FOR COMPUTER USERS
Computer users today have a better understanding of the health concerns
directly related to regular use of computers. Manifested in repetitive
stress injuries - from minor backaches to irreversible carpal tunnel
syndrome, this pervasive problem costs corporations millions yearly
in medical claims and lost productivity. The good news is that the
majority of these computer task-related injuries can be avoided, for
the most part, by using ergonomically designed chairs, and desks like
Biomorph that efficiently integrate computers and adjust to the individual
user.
"There's never been a better time for these designs. They make sense
because they were created with the end-user in mind," explains Roberta
Null, a retired professor of Miami University and author of "Universal
Design" which featured Biomorph. "A friendly worksurface enables a
healthier, more comfortable and, consequently, a more productive environment."
THE BIOMORPH RANGE OF DESKS
The Biomorph range consists of six styles of computer desk and several
styles of extension work surfaces and storage units, which can be
mixed and matched for a variety of layouts including freestanding,
corner, or quads. The desks are designed with multi-level, instantly
height-adjustable work surfaces - advantages that significantly increase
the functionality of the workspace and the comfort and productivity
of the worker. These features, as well as the inherent mobility of
the units, and personal customization capabilities, all lead to an
increased flexibility and integration of technology that responds
to the new modus operandi of computer users in today's corporate workplace
and home office.
The worksurfaces have 'soft', contoured lines and rounded edges. They
are manufactured from natural wood products, and finished as fine
furniture. A choice of surfaces includes high-density fiberboard -
an all-wood product, a blond maple decorative-edge plywood, and several
painted mat and metallic finishes. Biomorph Desks feature elegantly
designed, high-quality steel frames that are engineered and manufactured
in Denmark, Europe. All Biomorph Desks incorporate wire management
and computer equipment integration to ensure uncluttered worksurfaces.
In addition to the offerings in the standard range is the unique capability
to custom design and manufacture to suit a client's needs, including
surface color and finish options, size, and function modifications.
Biomorph Desks are marketed direct to the client which allows a high
level of service and customer support, while maintaining competitive
pricing and rapid delivery schedules.
Prices range from $675 (delivered) for the home office/small office
Exo LT desk, to $2095 for the Maxo desk, a multi-monitor workstation
ideal for multimedia and CAD applications. The Personal Desk, which
accommodates up to two monitors, sells for $1,295 and is ideal for
graphic and industrial design.

PRESS QUOTES
| "A
long stride toward better computer work furniture." |

San Francisco Examiner |
| "This
is a desk. Curved lines, soft tapered edges, adjustable surfaces.
I.D/Design builds its office furniture to complement the human
body. That means flexibility and comfort. The entire Biomorph
line distinguishes itself by morphing with your workspace and
your work style." |

| "...what
impresses me...is the expressive quality of the Biomorph desks.
They have character. Their surprising form suggests the freedom
computers promise, flexibility not only in work surfaces, but
in work locations , work hours and work styles. And their curvilinearity
projects a comforting message: that computers are not alien
machines, but natural extensions of the human body and brain."

PUBLICATIONS
"Universal Design: Creative Solutions for ADA Compliance,"
by Roberta L. Null, Ph.D., and Kenneth F. Cherry, 1996.
Pull quote: Industrial designer Stephen Barlow-Lawson devised a conceptual
scheme called Biomorph to better design furniture to fit people "as
they really are." His Biomorph desk is the result of his attempt to
show how a system can accomodate the natural curves of the human body
and subsequently enhance the quality of a worker's life and productivity.
"Access by Design," by George A. Covington/Bruce Hannah, 1997.
Chapter 4: The Office and Work
Pull quote, Office Workstations: "People are not straight lines, they
don't have sharp corners or edges," says Stephen Barlow-Lawson. "Human
beings need to fit with the tools they use rather than fit the tools
to their curves.
The Biomorph System presents various configurations for secretarial,
managerial, and executive workstations in kidney shapes with soft
edge treatments. By adding an independently adjustable keyboard support
tray and adjustable platforms to accommodate equipment and accessories,
the Biomorph workstation grows and reacts to the user." |
